Impaired Driver Rehabilitation Program

In Vermont, it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. The Impaired Driver Rehabilitation Program (IDRP) (formerly known as Project CRASH) provides people convicted of driving under the influence with the opportunity to openly examine facts about alcohol and other drugs, and discuss the role these substances play in their life. The program curriculum includes lectures, reading materials, videos and small group discussions.

If you are convicted of driving under the influence, you must successfully complete the IDRP before your privilege to drive can be reinstated. If treatment is required, you must successfully complete a treatment program with a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. The program evaluator will explain the process and requirements at your intake evaluation.

INTENSIVE AND NON-INTENSIVE PROGRAMS
If you have a first or second offense, you may choose to participate in the intensive or non-intensive IDRP. Intensive programs offer the education component in three or fewer days and non-intensive programs offer the education component in four days.

If you have a life suspension, please complete an intake at the IDRP office in your area—completion of the educational component of the IDRP is not required.

OUT OF STATE PROGRAMS
Vermont is a member of the 47 State Driver License Interstate Compact (link is external), which is an interstate compact used by several states to exchange information concerning license suspensions and traffic violations of non-residents and forward them to the state where they are licensed, known as the home state. The home state would treat the offense as if it had been committed at home, applying home state laws to the out-of-state offense.

Individuals with a Vermont impaired driving offense who reside in another state must complete that state’s approved impaired driver rehabilitation program. Proof of completion required. Please contact the Vermont IDRP for more information.

LIFETIME SUSPENSIONS
In-State clients who have a lifetime suspension, and are interested in applying for a license through the Total Abstinence Application Process will still need to complete an IDRP intake, Multiple Offender treatment requirements, and an IDRP Exit Interview. The Total Abstinence application is now maintained by the Vermont DMV and clients can obtain a copy by visiting the DMV website (link is external).

Out of state clients who have a lifetime suspension are not eligible to apply for a license through the Total Abstinence process. For more information, please visit the DMV website (link is external).
